MOCA, JaCIRT collaborating with local companies impacted by global outage

The Jamaica Cyber Incident Response Team (JaCIRT) is intensifying its efforts to address emerging cyber threats through strategic investments, public education, and the integration of advanced technologies. According to Lt Col Godphey Sterling, JaCIRT is adopting a multi-layered defense approach to strengthen cybersecurity resilience. The team is also focusing on the implications of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and quantum computing, with recommendations from the AI Task Force expected to enhance their cybersecurity strategies. AI is being incorporated into JaCIRT’s operations to handle the growing complexity of cyber threats, enabling quicker and more consistent detection of vulnerabilities and breaches.

In addition to improving technological capabilities, JaCIRT is committed to raising awareness among vulnerable groups, such as seniors, children, and people with disabilities. The organization is creating educational materials and utilizing a variety of platforms, including social media, billboards, and traditional media, to share crucial cybersecurity information. Furthermore, JaCIRT is extending its operations from an 8-to-5 schedule to a 24/7 system to improve monitoring and incident response, ensuring timely action even during weekends and holidays.

JaCIRT is also hosting activities during National Cybersecurity Awareness Month in October, under the theme "Building Resilience – Securing Our Nation". These include a launch event, weekly discussions on topics like securing digital assets and ransomware, and a cyber careers symposium for students and untrained employees. National Cybersecurity Awareness Day, on October 31, will feature an exposition to further educate the public. Lt Col Sterling emphasized the importance of participating in these events to better understand cybersecurity risks and protect both personal and business data.
